Blooming flowers
OR from bud to seeds
What does it look like when flowers bloom?
Materials needed:
-
flower
-
vase with water
-
phone
-
crayons and paper
Instructions:
-
Pick a bud of any flower. I chose this one because it only opens at night.
-
Wait for it to open up. You can either draw different stages or do a timelapse.
The science behind: Blooming.
Inside the bud, a tiny but complete flower forms. The sepals protect the bud before it opens. Over time, the bud opens and blossoms into a mature flower and the sepals look like little green leaves at the base of the flower. The flower is the sexually reproductive part of the plant. The petals of the flower are often very noticeable, brightly colored, and strongly scented in order to attract pollinators.
Suggestions:
-
Try different flowers and compare the time it takes for the blooms to open
-
What are the differences between male and female flowers?
When I carried out this little activity I had no idea how far and wide it can go. First of all, we have tried so many different flowers since, some of them several times.
